Discover Rice Thai Cookery

Walking into Rice Thai Cookery at 10614 SE Main St, Milwaukie, OR 97222, United States feels like stepping into a neighborhood spot that knows its regulars by face and flavor preference. I’ve eaten here multiple times over the past year, usually after work, and what stands out immediately is the consistency. The aroma of garlic, fish sauce, and slow-simmered curry hits before the menu even lands on the table, setting expectations that are usually met, if not exceeded.

The menu is compact but thoughtful, which in my experience is often a good sign. Instead of trying to do everything, this kitchen focuses on Thai staples done well. Pad Thai here isn’t overloaded with sugar, a common shortcut in many Americanized versions. According to research published by the Thai Trade Center USA, traditional Pad Thai balances sweet, sour, salty, and umami, and that balance shows up clearly in each bite. The noodles are tender, the tamarind tang comes through, and the protein options-from tofu to shrimp-are cooked to order rather than pre-batched.

One visit, I watched the cook prepare green curry from scratch, starting with a mortar-and-pestle paste rather than a jar. That process matters. Culinary institutes like Le Cordon Bleu emphasize that freshly ground curry paste releases essential oils that deepen flavor, and you can taste that difference here. The green curry arrives fragrant, with Thai basil still vibrant and coconut milk that feels creamy without being heavy. Spice levels are customizable, but even the medium carries authentic heat, so it’s worth ordering thoughtfully.

Rice dishes are another highlight, especially the basil fried rice. The grains stay separate, not greasy, which points to proper wok temperature and timing. The USDA’s food handling guidelines stress the importance of high-heat cooking for rice dishes to reduce moisture and improve texture, and this kitchen clearly follows that principle. The result is rice that absorbs flavor without turning mushy, paired with crisp vegetables and a smoky finish.

Reviews from local diners often mention portion size, and that praise is deserved. Plates are generous without feeling careless. I once split a massaman curry and a papaya salad with a friend, expecting to order more, but we left comfortably full. The papaya salad deserves special mention. It leans traditional, using lime juice and palm sugar instead of bottled dressing, and it’s a good example of how regional Thai techniques are respected here.

The location itself adds to the appeal. Being right on SE Main St makes it easy to stop by whether you’re a Milwaukie local or just passing through. Parking is straightforward, and the casual dining room suits both quick lunches and relaxed dinners. Service is friendly and efficient, not scripted, which builds trust. When I asked about ingredients due to a food sensitivity, the staff explained the sauces clearly and even suggested alternatives, something consumer trust studies from the National Restaurant Association identify as a key factor in repeat visits.

There are limitations worth noting. This isn’t a late-night spot, and the dining space is modest, so larger groups may feel tight during peak hours. Also, if you’re looking for fusion-style Thai or trendy plating, this place sticks closer to tradition. For many diners, that’s a strength rather than a drawback.

Overall, the experience here reflects care, technique, and respect for Thai culinary roots. From menu design to execution, everything feels intentional. That’s why so many reviews highlight reliability alongside flavor. It’s the kind of restaurant you return to not for novelty, but because you know exactly how satisfying the meal will be.

  • I don't often write positive reviews for places, but this place deserves one. That's how good Rice Thai Cookery is. The best Thai food I've ever had, and I've been to Thailand...twice. I got the yellow chicken curry. So flavorful and tender. My friend got the chicken pad Thai and was also very impressed. This place is a hidden jem in downtown Milwaukie. One of those places you walk past often but never stop in at. Do yourself a favor and give it a chance.

  • Love this place for a quick bite at lunch is when I usually go. Love downtown Milwaukie and Rice Thai Cookery adds to the love. Great food. Good portions. Fast service and so kind. Good seating, although the bandwidth in the restaurant is slow and sometimes non-existent meaning you may have to talk to your person across the table. take out is fast and packaged well and stays warm. I love the chicken pad Thai and love the peanut sauce. Parking is not great at busy times.

  • The pad kee mao is the best I've had in a very long time. There's so much color, char, and overall flavor. I've been here three times in the last month and each time it has been consistently delicious.

  • I got catering for 40 people and the process was wonderful. They were great to work with, very prompt and timely. The food was delicious, everyone loved it. We had a couple of both gluten free and vegan participants and they had great options that they loved. Highly recommend, will be getting catering from them again.

  • This place got the best PAD SEE EW in town. KAO MUN KAI TOD was superb. The service was great. You should not miss this place if you are around. Parking is like playing a musical chair, so be patient.

  • This was a delight to stop in after hitting a bunch of stop in the area. The service was fantastic, and the ambiance was lovely. Beware the heavy door...if the store says they're open, they are! I had the Peanut Sauce Delight (with chicken) and it was very tasty! Husband had the Spicy Basil Chicken and really liked it. We forgot to take pictures, and took a picture of the to-go Drunken Noodles (with beef).
